How do I use FTP?

Back To Support Index
Follow these steps to open a FTP session so you can transfer files to and from your server. To find out what FTP is click here.
  1. Open Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater.
  2. In the adddress bar type "ftp://target@yoursite.com" where "target" is the name of the directory you have permission to access and "yoursite.com" is the name of your web site. Be sure to type the "@" between the target and the site name, it is very important.

  3. Next you will get a username and password prompt. Just enter your password and click "Log On". The prompt will say: "Could not login to the FTP server with the user name and password specified." That is normal, just type in your password and make sure your username is correct. Also notice that the User Name should be the same as what you typed into the address bar in step 2.

  4. Next you will see the files that are in the directory you just accessed.

  5. You may now "Drag and Drop" files to the server by dragging them from your computer and dropping them on the ftp window.

  6. You may also "Copy and Paste" files to the server just like you would on your own computer.
Thats it you can now move files to and from a web server.
